Senator Mike Johanns signed a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) urging the utmost transparency as Democrats in the Senate and House of Representatives begin negotiations for a final health care bill. The letter, coordinated by Sen. John Thune (R-SD), cites President Obama's 2008 campaign promise to be transparent and open the negotiations to the American public. The letter was signed by 40 Senators.
"I find it unfortunate that the health care debate has devolved to the point that Senators must now make a formal request for honest, open negotiations," Johanns said. "Majority Leader Reid has stressed the importance of transparency, President Obama has promised it, and C-SPAN has pledged to carry out that promise. If cloaking these final negotiations in secrecy is the only way to get the bill passed, something is terribly wrong."
