Johanns Supports Nebraska Lawsuit Challenging Contraception Mandate

“I'm pleased the state of Nebraska, along with religious entities and
individuals in our state, are standing up to defend our basic right of religious freedom.”

WASHINGTON – Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) today offered his support to a lawsuit filed today by Nebraska, six other states and a number of religious entities challenging the Administration’s contraception mandate.

“I've said all along this mandate is a direct assault on our religious freedoms and the Constitution,” Johanns said. “The bottom line is that this Administration cannot force religious entities to violate their deeply held convictions and get away with it, it’s that simple. I'm pleased the state of Nebraska, along with religious entities and individuals in our state, are standing up to defend our basic right of religious freedom.”

The lawsuit argues that the mandate, which requires religious entities to offer birth control and abortion-inducing drugs to their employees despite religious convictions, violates religious freedoms granted in the First Amendment of the Constitution.
